For the first time in more than a decade, the Democrats will now control both the White House and the U.S. House and Senate, a dramatic and momentous change in the political landscape. As the political winds shift blue, they will certainly rustle the green boughs of the old-growth trees of the Tongass, and in our favor, we hope, after playing defense for the past four years. Join us at noon Alaska Time, Jan. 21, the day after Inauguration Day, for our webinar “Blue Congress, Green Tongass” about how the incoming Biden administration, the 117th Congress and this power shift could affect the Tongass National Forest. SEACC Executive Director Meredith Trainor will host a conversation with featured guest Leah Donahey, Legislative Director for the Alaska Wilderness League. As a lobbyist based in Washington, D.C., Leah will give us a behind-the-scenes look at the political shift in the capital and new opportunities for legislation that could enshrine Roadless Rule protections for the Tongass forever. RSVP below!
SEACC invites you to our new monthly Climate Conversations series to help you stay up-to-date and engaged on the latest climate change developments in the Biden administration and in Senator Murkowski’s office! Our first Climate Conversation will be Thursday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. Alaska Time, and is focusing on Biden’s ambitious “30 by 30” plan to permanently protect 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. Wild landscapes are critical to sequestering carbon and mitigating the worst effects of climate change, and SEACC believes those closest to the land — Indigenous people, commercial fishermen and local communities — know best how to protect those lands and must be centered in the 30 by 30 process. RSVP below to learn more about Biden’s 30 by 30 plan and how you can make sure it works for all Alaskans!
Oregon Wild is hosting a night on how the Tongass, and other mature forests, are powerful natural buffers against climate chaos. SEACC's own Sally Schlichting, Environmental Policy Analyst, will be guiding the evening. RSVP here! See the description below from the Oregon Wild website: The Tongass National Forest is an incredible resource — it protects a multitude of fish and wildlife, supports the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities, and provides one of the most powerful carbon sinks in the world. Older, mature forests have the greatest potential to sequester and store significant amounts of carbon, and to recover carbon that has been released to the atmosphere over the last 200 years. Alone, the Tongass contains 8 percent of the nation's total forest carbon stores. Join Sally Schlichting, Environmental Policy Analyst with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, on a virtual tour of this incredible landscape. This presentation will feature the fish, wildlife, and human communities that depend on the Tongass - and an exploration of how preserving it and other mature and old-growth forests is key to combating climate change. We will be raffling off a copy of Oregon's Ancient Forests: A Hiking Guide, a solar USB charger, and Oregon Wild hat. In addition, raffle […]

Join Southeast Alaska Conservation Council and The Alaska Center the next day, Friday, April 22nd to unpack the global developments and ground them in Alaskan actions.
We're back, baby! After a long COVID pause, we are ready to return to our usually scheduled SEACC Summer Bonfires! We're making some necessary changes to our normal format, in order to maintain COVID compliance and community wellbeing. For example, we will not be grilling or providing food. We will be providing packaged, sealed beverages in cans, along with plenty of fuel for a friendly fire. We have missed sharing space with you and can't wait to see you again! Here are some guidelines for returning to our summer socials: Bring some food! We can not safely prepare food for everyone with the resources at hand, but we do so enjoy breaking bread with you so we encourage people to bring food for themselves so we can still eat together. Wear a mask! Obviously you can't eat and wear a mask at the same time, but whenever not actively eating please wear your mask to respect and protect those who attendees will encounter at the end of festivities. Be mindful of space and maintain 6 feet from other guests. We have a good feeling about this summer, friends, and we can't wait to feel the power of your presence […]
Join SEACC Climate Organizer Matt Jackson for a night of action to support the American Jobs Plan! The American Jobs Plan is a once in a generation opportunity to win big on good projects for the Tongass and all of Southeast Alaska. President Biden’s plan will protect Southeast from the impacts of climate change while creating jobs, improving habitat, lowering renewable energy costs, and creating opportunity for our communities, but it's going to need your help, and Senator Murkowski’s, to get across the finish line! Join us at 6pm on Tuesday, May 25th over Zoom for an overview of the American Jobs Plan, then take immediate action on social media and over the phones, getting folks to call and write Senator Murkowski to take action for Southeast!
We so enjoyed seeing those who attended our May SEACC Summer Bonfire. Now it’s time for round two! We’ve made some necessary changes to our normal format as we continue to maintain COVID compliance and community well-being. We will not be grilling or providing food, but we will be offering canned drinks. We'll also bring plenty of fuel for a friendly fire and information on issues facing Southeast Alaska. Some SEACC staff will be in attendance, like Matt Jackson, SEACC's Climate Organizer who has been spearheading so many of our online events this last six months! Come bend his ear about climate, hear about why the American Jobs Plan matters, or just talk about the best parts of living in Southeast! Here are some guidelines for our summer socials: Bring some food! We cannot safely prepare food for guests with the resources at hand, but we do enjoy breaking bread with our community. We encourage people to bring food for themselves so we may all eat together. Though you are not required to do so while actively eating, please wear a mask to respect and protect other guests during the festivities. Please also be mindful of space and maintain 6 […]
