For the first time in more than a decade, the Democrats will now control both the White House and the U.S. House and Senate, a dramatic and momentous change in the political landscape. As the political winds shift blue, they will certainly rustle the green boughs of the old-growth trees of the Tongass, and in our favor, we hope, after playing defense for the past four years. Join us at noon Alaska Time, Jan. 21, the day after Inauguration Day, for our webinar “Blue Congress, Green Tongass” about how the incoming Biden administration, the 117th Congress and this power shift could affect the Tongass National Forest. SEACC Executive Director Meredith Trainor will host a conversation with featured guest Leah Donahey, Legislative Director for the Alaska Wilderness League. As a lobbyist based in Washington, D.C., Leah will give us a behind-the-scenes look at the political shift in the capital and new opportunities for legislation that could enshrine Roadless Rule protections for the Tongass forever. SEACC invites you to our new monthly Climate Conversations series to help you stay up-to-date and engaged on the latest climate change developments in the Biden administration and in Senator Murkowski’s office! Our first Climate Conversation will be Thursday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. Alaska Time, and is focusing on Biden’s ambitious “30 by 30” plan to permanently protect 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. Wild landscapes are critical to sequestering carbon and mitigating the worst effects of climate change, and SEACC believes those closest to the land — Indigenous people, commercial fishermen and local communities — know best how to protect those lands and must be centered in the 30 by 30 process. RSVP below to learn more about Biden’s 30 by 30 plan and how you can make sure it works for all Alaskans!
Oregon Wild is hosting a night on how the Tongass, and other mature forests, are powerful natural buffers against climate chaos. SEACC's own Sally Schlichting, Environmental Policy Analyst, will be guiding the evening. RSVP here! See the description below from the Oregon Wild website: The Tongass National Forest is an incredible resource — it protects a multitude of fish and wildlife, supports the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities, and provides one of the most powerful carbon sinks in the world. Older, mature forests have the greatest potential to sequester and store significant amounts of carbon, and to recover carbon that has been released to the atmosphere over the last 200 years. Alone, the Tongass contains 8 percent of the nation's total forest carbon stores. Join Sally Schlichting, Environmental Policy Analyst with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, on a virtual tour of this incredible landscape. This presentation will feature the fish, wildlife, and human communities that depend on the Tongass - and an exploration of how preserving it and other mature and old-growth forests is key to combating climate change. We will be raffling off a copy of Oregon's Ancient Forests: A Hiking Guide, a solar USB charger, and Oregon Wild hat. In addition, raffle […]
