SEACC is making big moves!

We have exciting news this spring: SEACC is moving! In the last few years, our ranks have grown along with our program work. So, like fledgling robins in spring, we have gradually outgrown our nest at 224 Gold Street and are taking flight to new digs!

This past week we closed on a bright, airy, spacious new office space at 2207 Jordan Avenue in Jordan Creek, near the airport in Juneau.

The new space will give our hard-working staff some much-needed elbow room, as well as better light, nicer views, more private and small group spaces for meetings, and more parking! The new location will give visitors both from Juneau and other Southeast communities greater ease of access to drop in and say hello, given the proximity to the airport and ferries, as well as more parking, and easier access for those with mobility limitations. We will be moving and settling in during the month of April and look forward to sharing our new space with you during a “housewarming” party early this summer! Stay tuned for the date.

The decision to leave our Gold Street home was not made lightly. We are deeply grateful to the forward-thinking SEACC board members who, years ago, initiated the purchase of our current building, and to the generous major donor who anonymously helped pay it off. With the support of both our terrific board and the original anonymous donor, we have been able to leverage that incredible original gift to purchase our new space.

Are you in Juneau, or coming through for Folk Fest? Help us say goodbye to our days on Gold Street in style during our Folk Fest Barbecue on April 10th from 4:30-6:30 pm! The address is 224 Gold St. We will be grilling up burgers and veggie fare, and enjoying the music of folk instrumental duo, ‘The Chuzz,’ aka Charles Sidlinger and Chase Baldwin. Bring something — for the grill, to drink, or even a side dish — and be sure to invite your friends! Spread the word; we are going big for this one! You can RSVP and share the event on Facebook.

Thank you for everything you do for SEACC, and for all of your support as we embark upon this new adventure together.

Meredith

P.S. We almost forgot to mention — the 224 Gold Street property will soon be listed for sale, and is zoned for both residential and commercial! Are you or someone you know looking for a home or office with parking(!) in downtown Juneau? Shoot us an email at info@seacc.org for more information!

To the US Forest Service,

I am writing to express my strong support for the Forest Service’s proposed Herbert Glacier Cabin Project.

Herbert Glacier is a treasured area that provides opportunities for a wide range of recreational and subsistence activities, including fishing, hunting, trapping, berry picking, hiking, and camping. According to a 2022 Alaska public use survey, this site was the most requested location in the Tongass for a new public-use cabin—a clear indication of its popularity and significance to both local residents and visitors.

Placing a cabin approximately one mile from the glacier terminus along the existing 4.4-mile Herbert Glacier Trail would meaningfully expand public access to this high-value recreation area. The cabin would offer hikers and cyclists a safe and comfortable place to rest and enjoy the stunning scenery. The inclusion of a helicopter landing pad would also provide accessibility for those unable to make the journey by foot, broadening the opportunity for a more diverse range of users to enjoy this exceptional landscape.

In summer, when Juneau experiences an influx of cruise visitors and popular areas become congested, Herbert Glacier offers a quiet refuge for those seeking to reconnect with nature. This project will enhance public enjoyment of the Tongass in a way that aligns with our shared values of sustainable, low-impact outdoor recreation.

Thank you for considering this valuable addition to our public lands.

Sincerely,
