MARCH 23, 2020 — The Alaska Roadless Rule, Prince of Wales wolf population and Sitka herring fishery are just some of the important topics that will be discussed at a meeting of the Southeast Alaska Subsistence Regional Advisory Council this week.
The Council will be meeting via teleconference from March 24-26, and will provide updates and take public comment on multiple issues related to Southeast Alaska’s hunting and subsistence resources.
USFS Regional Forester Dave Schmid is to expected to give a welcoming statement and be available for questions about the Roadless Rule Tuesday morning. Later that afternoon, U.S. Forest Service Regional Economist Nicole Grewe is slated to give a presentation on the Roadless Rule. On Wednesday morning during Public and Tribal Comment on Non-Agenda Items, Southeast Alaska Conservation Council will provide an update on the conservation community’s advocacy during the Roadless Rulemaking process and give testimony regarding their concerns with how public involvement and formal consultations occurred.
Several Alaska Native women from Hoonah who are WECAN Representatives will be testifying about how traditional Alaska Native uses were not sufficiently considered under the federal Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act during the Alaska Roadless Rulemaking process.
