SUMMARY:Tongass National Forest: Our Most Powerful Natural Climate Solution
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Wild is hosting a night on how the Tongass\, and other mature forests\, are powerful natural buffers against climate chaos. SEACC’s own Sally Schlichting\, Environmental Policy Analyst\, will be guiding the evening. RSVP here! \nSee the description below from the Oregon Wild website: \n\nThe Tongass National Forest is an incredible resource — it protects a multitude of fish and wildlife\, supports the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities\, and provides one of the most powerful carbon sinks in the world. \nOlder\, mature forests have the greatest potential to sequester and store significant amounts of carbon\, and to recover carbon that has been released to the atmosphere over the last 200 years. Alone\, the Tongass contains 8 percent of the nation’s total forest carbon stores. \nJoin Sally Schlichting\, Environmental Policy Analyst with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council\, on a virtual tour of this incredible landscape. This presentation will feature the fish\, wildlife\, and human communities that depend on the Tongass – and an exploration of how preserving it and other mature and old-growth forests is key to combating climate change. \nWe will be raffling off a copy of Oregon’s Ancient Forests: A Hiking Guide\, a solar USB charger\, and Oregon Wild hat. In addition\, raffle tickets are available to win one of five Southeast Alaska Conservation Coalition 50th anniversary hats\, with proceeds benefiting SEACC. Raffle tickets are $5 and are an optional purchase below. These tickets not only help us continue these Wednesday presentations but also support forest conservation efforts.
