SUMMARY:SEACC May Bonfire!
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe’re back\, baby! After a long COVID pause\, we are ready to return to our usually scheduled SEACC Summer Bonfires! We’re making some necessary changes to our normal format\, in order to maintain COVID compliance and community wellbeing. For example\, we will not be grilling or providing food. We will be providing packaged\, sealed beverages in cans\, along with plenty of fuel for a friendly fire. We have missed sharing space with you and can’t wait to see you again! Here are some guidelines for returning to our summer socials: \n\nBring some food! We can not safely prepare food for everyone with the resources at hand\, but we do so enjoy breaking bread with you so we encourage people to bring food for themselves so we can still eat together.\nWear a mask! Obviously you can’t eat and wear a mask at the same time\, but whenever not actively eating please wear your mask to respect and protect those who attendees will encounter at the end of festivities.\nBe mindful of space and maintain 6 feet from other guests.\n\nWe have a good feeling about this summer\, friends\, and we can’t wait to feel the power of your presence again.

SUMMARY:Tongass National Forest: Our Most Powerful Natural Climate Solution
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Wild is hosting a night on how the Tongass\, and other mature forests\, are powerful natural buffers against climate chaos. SEACC’s own Sally Schlichting\, Environmental Policy Analyst\, will be guiding the evening. RSVP here! \nSee the description below from the Oregon Wild website: \n\nThe Tongass National Forest is an incredible resource — it protects a multitude of fish and wildlife\, supports the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities\, and provides one of the most powerful carbon sinks in the world. \nOlder\, mature forests have the greatest potential to sequester and store significant amounts of carbon\, and to recover carbon that has been released to the atmosphere over the last 200 years. Alone\, the Tongass contains 8 percent of the nation’s total forest carbon stores. \nJoin Sally Schlichting\, Environmental Policy Analyst with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council\, on a virtual tour of this incredible landscape. This presentation will feature the fish\, wildlife\, and human communities that depend on the Tongass – and an exploration of how preserving it and other mature and old-growth forests is key to combating climate change. \nWe will be raffling off a copy of Oregon’s Ancient Forests: A Hiking Guide\, a solar USB charger\, and Oregon Wild hat. In addition\, raffle tickets are available to win one of five Southeast Alaska Conservation Coalition 50th anniversary hats\, with proceeds benefiting SEACC. Raffle tickets are $5 and are an optional purchase below. These tickets not only help us continue these Wednesday presentations but also support forest conservation efforts.

SUMMARY:Climate Conversations: 30 by 30 for Alaska
DESCRIPTION:SEACC invites you to our new monthly Climate Conversations series to help you stay up-to-date and engaged on the latest climate change developments in the Biden administration and in Senator Murkowski’s office! \nOur first Climate Conversation will be Thursday\, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. Alaska Time\, and is focusing on Biden’s ambitious “30 by 30” plan to permanently protect 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. \nWild landscapes are critical to sequestering carbon and mitigating the worst effects of climate change\, and SEACC believes those closest to the land — Indigenous people\, commercial fishermen and local communities — know best how to protect those lands and must be centered in the 30 by 30 process. \nRSVP below to learn more about Biden’s 30 by 30 plan and how you can make sure it works for all Alaskans!

SUMMARY:Blue Congress\, Green Tongass
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in more than a decade\, the Democrats will now control both the White House and the U.S. House and Senate\, a dramatic and momentous change in the political landscape. \nAs the political winds shift blue\, they will certainly rustle the green boughs of the old-growth trees of the Tongass\, and in our favor\, we hope\, after playing defense for the past four years. \nJoin us at noon Alaska Time\, Jan. 21\, the day after Inauguration Day\, for our webinar “Blue Congress\, Green Tongass” about how the incoming Biden administration\, the 117th Congress and this power shift could affect the Tongass National Forest. \nSEACC Executive Director Meredith Trainor will host a conversation with featured guest Leah Donahey\, Legislative Director for the Alaska Wilderness League. As a lobbyist based in Washington\, D.C.\, Leah will give us a behind-the-scenes look at the political shift in the capital and new opportunities for legislation that could enshrine Roadless Rule protections for the Tongass forever. \nRSVP below!

SUMMARY:Tongass Literary Night: Featuring Authors Hank Lentfer and Russell Heath
DESCRIPTION:Join SEACC for a literary look of the Tongass National Forest with authors Hank Lentfer and Russell Heath\, Tuesday\, Dec. 8\, 2020\, from 3-4:30 p.m. Alaska Time. \nWe are thrilled to be able to present these two authors\, their experience and their excellent writing for this online book event! \nClick Here The Day Of The Event To Attend!\nLifelong Alaskan Hank Lentfer lives his life with the seasons\, and he writes in the winters. His latest book\, “Raven’s Witness: The Alaska Life of Richard K. Nelson” recently won the 2020 Banff Mountain Book Award Winner – Grand Prize for its exploration of naturalist Richard K. Nelson’s life. Called Nels by his friends\, Richard’s life was a unique cultural bridge between Indigenous cultures and western culture as well as a persistent\, courageous labor for the health of the wild flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska. \nRussell Heath\, a previous SEACC Executive Director\, seasoned activist\, world traveler\, and novelist recently released his second novel: “Rinn’s Crossing.” A pulse-pounding political thriller set in Southeast Alaska\, this novel holds a unique place in the world as a fictitious exploration of the incredibly real political machinations around timber\, the Tongass\, and the lives of the people who live here. \nBoth books will be available for sale! SUMMARY:Roadless Rule FEIS Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Tongass National Forest is under threat because the State of Alaska seeks to exempt the Tongass from the National Roadless Rule. The Forest Service and Secretary Sonny Perdue recently released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Alaska Roadless Rule. The FEIS recommends removing Roadless Rule protections from 9.3 million acres of the Tongass National Forest. \nDespite support for keeping National Roadless Rule protections on the Tongass from 96% of public comments\, the FEIS indicated the recommended alternative as the full exemption (Alternative 6). This could lead to new logging roads and more old-growth clearcut logging on the Tongass. \nThe webinar will be a deep dive into the Alaska Roadless Rule FEIS and the recommended alternative\, and discuss how you can take action moving forward. There will also be time for questions. \nSign up below to join our Roadless Rule FEIS Webinar on Wednesday\, October 14 at 5:30pm AKST (9:30pm EST). Once you sign up\, don’t forget to mark your calendar and check your inbox because you will receive an email with all the details you need to join the Zoom call.
