8 Quick, Painless, Cheap Ways You Can Cut Your Electricity Use Right Now!

Got those incandescent bulbs all replaced with compact fluorescent ones?  Great start!   Now consider these easy ideas for even more energy savings!

  • Switch off unneeded lights inside and outside your house.  This action has the added benefit of showing your neighbors and friends that you’re doing your part to help the community through this challenging event.
  • Pull the plug on home computer and other electronics and appliances when not in use.  Even when “off”, many of these items, including your TV, are using power, so pull the plug at the wall or flip the power strip switch.
  • Unplug the freezer. That freezer can cost you $50 a month to run at the high rates we’re facing.  Good time to clean out all that freezer-burned fish and have a barbeque.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and skip the dryer.  Line drying worked for our grandparents and if Juneau’s weather cooperates, it will work for us.
  • Let the automatic dishwasher do the dishes and skip the dishpan hands. Washing a full load of dishes in the dishwasher actually uses less energy, especially on the power-saver setting, than doing them by hand.
  • Use the microwave. We may need to skip the rhubarb pies in the oven this spring and zap the cobbler in the microwave instead.  Microwave ovens use far less energy than our electric ranges do. Take shorter showers and fewer baths.  Stand up for energy efficiency! Showers typically use less energy than soaking in a full tub.
  • Play it cool. Turn down the thermostat and keep the winter comforter on the bed for a couple more months. If you can, lower the temperature setting on the hot water heater, too.
