Report: Talks propose trading away key Tongass lands to Sealaska
The Sealaska Lands Bill would give 30 world-class hunting, fishing, and tourism destinations now in the public domain to the Sealaska Corporation. Eight of the 30 places that could be lost are described in a Southeast Alaska Conservation Council report, out today.

Under a bill (HB 168) currently under consideration in Alaska, any Alaskan trying to challenge a state permit would be required to post a bond or security to cover "[wages and benefits for employees and contractors] that may be lost if the industrial operation is wrongfully enjoined."

Southeast Energy Plan Released for Public Comment
The draft plan--which is available for public comments through March 19th--recommends that Southeast should significantly increase demand side management and energy efficiency programs (and save the region about $137 million in 50 years), among other recommendations.
Alaska Coastal Management Ballot Initiative Hits the Streets
SEACC is supporting a citizen's initiative to restore Alaska's coastal management program, which expired this spring after several decades of successful operation. The program helps coordinate federal, state, and local permitting processes, and give local governments a voice in these decisions, helping address problems early and reduce the need for lawsuits.

Tonka Timber Sale Comments Submitted
SEACC recently submitted comments on the proposed Tonka Timber Sale southwest of the community of Petersburg on the Lindenberg Peninsula of Kupreanof Island. The timber sale proposes to log between 25.2 and 53.4 million board feet of old-growth timber and would require the construction of 10 miles of of new roads.
