Herbert Mine

Background

The Project is owned by a partnership consisting of Grande Portage and Quaterra Resources. These companies have been conducting exploration drilling for Gold, Silver, Copper, Zinc, Lead and Tungsten. They are in a very early stage of exploration. It is being primarily promoted as a gold mine.
In 2010 16 exploration holes were drilled and aerial and geologic mapping was conducted. In 2011 drilling was expanded to 30 holes and baseline water testing was begun. The plan for 2012 is to drill 60-70 exploration holes for a total depth of over 3,900 feet. All this exploration has been permitted by the Forest Service under a categorical exclusion from having to perform any environment assessment.
Conservation Values

The Windfall Lake and Herbert River area next to this project is a heavily used recreation area for fishing and camping by Juneau residents. Trails with boardwalk originate from both the Eagle River and Montana Creeks sides. Herbert River is home to Coho and King Salmon. Bears and Mountain Goats populate the valleys and rocky areas.
An active mine in this beautiful area would require a road, around the clock drilling and blasting, crushers and mill facility, waste rock piles and toxic tailings dump. It would also require power generation, waste water treatment and commuter traffic.
