Mining and Clean Water

The same geology that gives Southeast Alaska and the Tongass National Forest its dramatic pinnacles, vibrant blue glaciers and quaint communities tucked between mountain and sea also makes it one of the most mineral-rich areas in North America. Mining is a notoriously dirty and damaging business, and this is of particular concern in such a special place as the Tongass National Forest. Any mining in Southeast Alaska, if done at all, should be done with the utmost care, attention and respect for the land, fish, wildlife and communities that depend on a thriving forest.

Mining is a notoriously dirty and damaging business, and this is of particular concern in such a special place as the Tongass National Forest.

Any mining in Southeast Alaska, if appropriate, should be done with the utmost care, attention and respect for the land, fish, wildlife and communities that depend on a thriving forest.

SEACC's mining strategy prioritizes working on large projects in advanced stages of exploration and development that present significant threats to water quality and where we can partner with communities and other organizations to address those threats.
