The Big Picture

Southeast Alaska is an archipelago of islands large and small and a rugged strip of the mainland bordering Canada and the glacier-capped Coast Range mountains.

Communities are dispersed throughout the region based on traditional village locations and proximity to resources, whether fishing grounds, safe harbors, mineral deposits or large trees.  The places between communities are wild, bountiful and in many places still pristine.

This combination of geography, wildlife habitat, remote communities and pristine wilderness makes it challenging, but not impossible, to find transportation solutions that match the needs of Southeast communities and the forest and waters they depend on.
