Protected Places

Seventeen million acres large, rich with wild life habitats and cathedral like stands of old growth trees, the Tongass is the crown jewel of the National Forest System and a national treasure.

The Tongass boasts some of the most productive forests, rivers, inlets and bays on earth.  As part of the National Forest system, all Americans own the Tongass, and it provides recreational hunting, fishing and outdoor adventure for Alaskans and visitors.  It also provides a traditional subsistence lifestyle for Southeast Alaskans.

Although the entire Tongass is a National Treasure, there are some places within it that SEACC recognizes as special places, not only for their beauty, but for their ecological and cultural value. Our Wild Idea conservation plan helps ensure protection of the biological heart of the Tongass.
