Explore the Tongass

Southeast Alaska is a unique place, a national and natural treasure where wild salmon still fill the rivers and streams, bald eagles still soar across the sky, bears still roam ancient old-growth forests, and people still make their living off the land.

The 17 million acre Tongass National Forest--the crown jewel of our National Forest System--consists of a narrow mainland strip of steep and rugged mountains, icefields and glaciers, and over one thousand islands.

The Tongass is a place where the people of Southeast Alaska raise their families among some of the most productive and in-tact forests, rivers, inlets and bays on earth.

As part of the National Forest system, all Americans own the Tongass.
