Clean Water Assistant
The Southeast Alaska Conservation Council seeks a full-time special assistant to work on mining and water quality issues in Southeast Alaska. Position is temporary (6 months) with potential to become permanent. Based in Juneau. Salary to be determined.
Duties:
The Clean Water Assistant will work with the Sustainability and Clean Water Director to address water quality and mining issues, including but not limited to:
- Outreach, Education, and Advocacy – (50% of time)
- Outreach to Native Alaskan organizations, municipalities, concerned citizens, etc. on mining and water quality issues.
- Creation of fact sheets, press releases, or other material related to mining and water quality issues.
- Advocate for clean water with local, state, and regional leaders.
Mining – (30% of time)
- Track mining operation and mineral explorations in Southeast Alaska.
- Evaluate and comment on mining proposals.
- Coordinate with technical experts and attorneys to evaluate mine proposals.
- Research environmental impacts of mining operations.
- Research biological values of areas where mines are proposed.
Water Quality- (20% of time)
- Monitor state and federal water quality standards.
- Monitor and comment on changes to water quality standards, proposals for impaired waterbody listings, contaminated site cleanups, etc.
- Track water discharge permits and coastal zone management authorizations.
Qualifications:
- Need experience running grassroots activism and media campaigns.
- Comfortable working on controversial issues.
- Highly-motivated.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- College degree in relevant field.
- Knowledge of Clean Water Act, permitting regulations, and hard rock mining issues a plus.
- Familiarity with Southeast Alaska a plus.
